Self-help contact point Styria - central register

Modules:

Central register of the self-help contact point Styria

'You alone can do it, but you cannot manage it alone', with this slogan the self help contact point styria offers its services to all affected people and supports them with providing a single access point.

The key concept is to develop the skills of people and promote them so they are able to shape their social enviromnent and their own lives as far as possible themselves.

A support group is a voluntary association of people whose activities are directed towards the joint management of diseases, mental and social problems of which they are either affected by themselves or as members.

Self-help groups provide information to patients and their families, as well as practical help in life. An important element here is the exchange of experiences, and the objective and emotional support.

Studies

EuRADa

Modules:

Background

Most aortic diseases are life-threatening, requiring surgical, interventional or medical therapies. The results of these treatment options are limited to single center experience. Many questions are open regarding the best treatment not answered yet. Controversy remains about what constitutes are the best acute medical care, including diagnostics, peri-operative management and optimal surgical, interventional or medical treatment as well as the long-term therapy. The aim should be to reduce the morbitity and mortality of this disease.

Actual studies are not very clear in terms of best treatment options of aortic diseases. The decision what kind of treatment is very individual and depends on the aortic pathology, size of the aortic disease and the comorbidities of the patients. Additional research for the individual treatment is necessary.

Aim

The aim of EuRADa is to gain knowledge about these diseases while continuously improving surgical, interventional and medical therapy for these patients. With this knowledge is it possible to improve the treatment and to identify parameter to improve the survival rate of the patient. The register will collect and evaluate data about the patient status, diagnostics, therapy methods, complications, cause of death, and follow-up data. The mid- and long-term aim is the continuous improvement of the treatment. Most of the information available on the management and treatment of these patients concerns retrospective single-centre experience.

Posthorax

Modules:

World Largest Prospective Randomized Multicenter Trial Regarding Prevention of Sternal Wound Complications After Open Heart Surgery

Objective: A prospective randomized mulitcenter trial was performed for analyzing efficacy of a specifically designed vest (Posthorax support vest) to prevent sternal wound infections after cardiac surgery and identify risk factors.

Methods: From 07/2008 until 03/2010 n=2632 patients undergoing cardiac surgery via median sternotomy were randomized to receive a Posthorax® vest or not. Patients were instructed to wear the vest postoperatively 24hrs/day for at least 6 weeks, follow-up was 90days. Protocol drop out occurred if no vest was applied within 72hrs. postoperatively. Main statistics are based on an intention-to-treat(ITT) analysis. Further analysis involved all subgroups including drop out patients.
